Montserrat

Montserrat is an essential destination for religious people and for lovers of culture and nature.

The “sawn mountain ” is located 60 km from Barcelona between the regions of Bages, Anoia and Baix Llobregat. It is 10 km long and its highest point is Sant Jeroni peak, 1,236 metres high. Its formation is the result of extraordinary natural and geographical processes that have been shaping the mountain for millennia, creating peculiar shapes, unique in Catalonia.

The monastery of Montserrat, founded in the 11th century, is a Benedictine monastery, the largest one in Catalonia. The Abbey has become an important religious and tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world.

To get to the monastery, there are several options: by your group’s coach, or either by rack railway or by the “Aeri” cable car, from the town of Monistrol de Montserrat.

Itinerary

We will visit the enclosure around the sanctuary with its points of interest: Plaza del Abad Oliba,  Plaza de Santa María, the interior of the Basilica, the image of the Virgin of Montserrat “La Moreneta”. We will also have the opportunity to witness the singing of the Virolai  by the children choir Escolania de Montserrat.

Optionally, you can also visit the Museum of Montserrat, which exhibits various collections of archaeology and art. It is worth highlighting the collections of ancient paintings with works by important artists such as Caravaggio or El Greco; modern Catalan painting and sculpture, with works by modernist artists such as Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol and the avant-garde of Salvador Dalí. It also contains impressionist French paintings, with works by Monet, Degas, Renoir…
